RAFIKI / FOREST
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park
Zanzibar’s only national park, home of the endemic red colobus and a mangrove boardwalk.
The forest holds about 100 tree species from 43 families and a great range of indigenous flora and fauna: Zanzibar red colobus, blue Sykes’ monkeys, bush pigs, Aders’ duiker, elephant shrews, chameleons, birds and butterflies. The best time to see wildlife is early morning. Visitors are asked to keep three metres between themselves and any animal, and not to visit with cold or flu symptoms — the monkeys have almost no resistance to human disease.
A visit also includes the mangrove swamp and boardwalk.
