Peace Memorial Museum

Beit el Amani — a domed museum of Zanzibar’s history from the Omani sultans to independence.

Designed by the British architect J H Sinclair, who also designed the High Court and the British Residency, its spherical design acknowledges Zanzibar’s Arab influence and recalls the architecture of Istanbul and India. Inside are history books, archaeological finds, records of early trade, slavery, palaces, mosques, sultans, explorers and missionaries, plus traditional crafts, stamps and coins.
